During this time of year, many of you are sitting at home thinking about all the things that you are thankful for.
Some of you are having an easier time with that than others.
It is at this time that we often look back on the year and rate how good or how rough it’s been.
This year has been pretty rough for my family, but there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for; blessings to acknowledge and be grateful for.
Two months ago, I woke up to my cell phone ringing at 2:40am (no good calls, come at that time of the morning).
On the other line, the caller proceeded to tell me that my son was in an accident. He was driving and was t-boned by another car.
The person went on to describe details about the accident, the damage to both cars, the fact that all airbags had deployed and it’s a miracle that my son walked away from the accident.
Oh my goodness, FINALLY he said that my son was ok.
I had been hearing the words “my son is dead, my son is dead”, as the caller described all the details about the accident. I just knew those were to be his next words…but it wasn’t.
My Son Was Alive.
I was so emotional I thanked God through my tears!
Keep It In Perspective
That night, the 2000 Honda CRV that was our first family car (when it was just me and my son), was totalled. The car I bought and paid for, with the hopes of handing down to my son as his first car, was gone!
And I had just gotten the front fender and wheel barrel repaired. Ouch!
My insurance will DEFINITELY increase…A LOT!!
And not having the Honda means that we are down to one car. But NONE of that matters, because my son is alive!
That night a lot changed for our family…the consequences of which will continue on for awhile. But God saved my son, so all is well!
Focus On The Good
By the grace of God my son was alive and no one else was injured.
I knew I was very fortunate. Things could have ended very differently. This I know all too well.
I don’t know what hand you’ve been dealt this year, I can only imagine that it was not always good.
But I do know that there is a God who loves us and wants to comfort us when times are hard.
I want to encourage you to take the Gratitude Challenge. Each night before you go to bed, I challenge you to identify one thing…. just one thing, to be thankful for!
Start off with 30 days, then go as long as you can (or remember to do it).
There is no right or wrong answer…one day you may be grasping at straws to find something to be thankful for. Other days, your may have a hard time picking just one.
Once you begin to focus on the blessings all around you the hard times will become a bit more bearable.
No, they won’t miraculously go away, but you will be training your brain to focus on the good.
Overtime, your feelings about things will change, your perspective will be more positive, you will be happier, more productive and more enjoyable to be around.
I pray that in spite of all the challenges you may have faced this year or are facing right now, you are a) comforted in knowing that God is with you and b) that in the midst of it all, there is something to be grateful for!
You may just have to look a little harder to find it!
I’d love to hear how your Gratitude Challenge is going!
